Vaccination for Cats and Kittens

Vaccination is the foundation of preventative veterinary medicine. Thanks to vaccines, we have successfully eradicated many diseases that were once deadly for pets.

Kittens in particular are vulnerable to catching certain life-threatening diseases because their immune system is not fully developed. Vaccination gives them a chance to create the antibodies that will help them fight off the diseases they could be exposed to from young age.

If you want to travel with your cat, make sure to check the vaccination requirements for your destination. Some countries, like the United States for example, require your pet to be vaccinated to prevent the spread of disease. Many kennels and animal day care centres require vaccinations as well.

What are the core vaccines for cats and kittens?

The FVCP vaccine, also known as the core vaccine, prevents feline panleukopenia, feline viral rhinotracheitis and calicivirus.

What other vaccines are available?

We also administer rabies and leukemia vaccines at the clinic. All animals that spend time outdoors should at least get the core vaccine and the rabies vaccine.

How often should I get my pet vaccinated?

Our staff will talk to you about the vaccination schedule during your first appointment with the veterinarian. Kittens are more vulnerable so they need to be vaccinated more frequently. They should receive their first vaccine dose around eight weeks old, followed by a booster dose at 12 weeks and a second dose at 16 weeks old. After this initial round, your cat will need to get additional vaccinations every one or two years, depending on the agreed upon schedule. If you choose to have your cat vaccinated at our clinic, our team will follow up with you and send you reminders when it is time for your pet to be vaccinated again.
