Vaccination Guide for Dogs

At Clinique vétérinaire de Cowansville, we are committed to helping you make an informed decision regarding your dog’s vaccination. This explanatory guide aims to provide you with all the necessary information to make a choice that suits your pet’s needs.

Process:

During your appointment, an animal health technician will greet you and ask questions about your pet’s lifestyle and environment. The goal is to assess their exposure to certain infectious diseases and determine an appropriate vaccination protocol. With this information in hand, you can discuss the various options with our technician. Next, the veterinarian will perform a complete physical examination of your dog before proceeding with the vaccination.

This appointment lasts about 40 minutes.

Important: According to the Ordre des médecins vétérinaires du Québec (OMVQ), a vaccination must be preceded by a complete physical examination by the veterinarian (Code of Ethics of Veterinarians, section II, article 9, paragraph 3).

A consultation fee will be charged for each vaccination visit, even for boosters.

Available Vaccines:

Core Vaccine (DHPP)

This vaccine protects against four highly contagious canine diseases that can be transmitted directly (from one animal to another) or indirectly (via contaminated objects or surfaces). Even dogs that primarily stay indoors can be exposed to these diseases.

  • Distemper (Canine Distemper): Causes gastrointestinal, respiratory, and neurological issues. This disease has become rare thanks to vaccination.
  • Hepatitis: Affects the respiratory system, liver, eyes, and blood. This disease is also rare due to vaccination.
  • Parainfluenza: Attacks the respiratory system, causing flu-like symptoms.
  • Parvovirus: Highly contagious and persistent, it causes severe gastrointestinal issues (hemorrhagic diarrhea, profuse vomiting).

There is no curative treatment for these diseases; the prognosis is often guarded, and hospitalization is necessary in most cases.

Rabies Vaccine (Imrab)

Rabies is a fatal disease transmitted by the bite or scratch of an infected animal. Contrary to popular belief, it is still present in Quebec. It is crucial to protect your dog, especially since this disease is transmissible to humans. This vaccine is also required for traveling to the United States.

Leptospirosis Vaccine

This bacterial disease, transmitted through the urine of contaminated animals, can severely damage your dog’s kidneys and liver. The vaccine is particularly recommended for dogs that spend time in the countryside, dog parks, or wooded areas.

Lyme Disease Vaccine

Transmitted by ticks, this disease is endemic in certain regions, such as the Eastern Townships. Although treatable with antibiotics, some cases are resistant to treatment. The vaccine reduces the risk of infection but does not protect against ticks themselves.

Kennel Cough Vaccine (Bordetella)

Administered orally, this vaccine protects against a highly contagious respiratory infection. It is recommended for dogs that attend kennels, dog parks, or participate in obedience or grooming classes.

The Importance of Vaccine Boosters:

For optimal protection, it is crucial to adhere to vaccination booster schedules, defined according to your dog’s age and vaccination status. If boosters are not administered on time, your dog may not be adequately protected.
