Animals cannot let us know when their teeth hurt, so it’s important to schedule frequent dental exams to assess whether they need teeth cleaning or other dental care. Our clinic performs a variety of dental services on site, including scaling, polishing, dental X-rays and extractions.
What is scaling?
Scaling involves thoroughly cleaning your pet’s mouth and teeth. This procedure is done under general anaesthesia so that your pet remains immobile throughout. The scaling process itself is very similar to the technique used for humans. We clean your pet’s teeth using an ultrasound probe then polish them with an electric polisher and mint paste. We sometimes need to perform tooth extractions when your pet’s tooth or gum health requires it. Over time, tartar can damage teeth and gums.
In more severe cases, the gum can gradually detach from the tooth and cause irreversible damage to the tooth’s roots and bone. That is why it is sometimes necessary to extract teeth. Tartar contains thousands of bacteria. They can enter the bloodstream through bleeding gums and damage the heart valves, kidneys and liver. Healthy teeth are key to a healthy pet!
How can I help keep my pet’s teeth healthy?
For good oral health, you should first make it a habit to brush your pet’s teeth every day. As with people, brushing your pet’s teeth is the best way to prevent tartar buildup.
When combined with good dental hygiene, certain foods can also help keep your pet’s teeth healthy. There are even dental foods and treats. Talk with your veterinarian about which option is best for your pet.
